personality
Stoic and silent to a fault, it can be difficult to get words out of this man. Instead, he speaks with his actions - a man of what little words he promises. He is articulate in his gestures, conveying a thousand words in the simplest of nods. Despite his quiet demeanor, he is rough around the edges and slow to anger. Enthusiasm is rarely seen.
Despite this, he dislikes to see human and pokemon suffering and endeavors to help others and spread his teachings that consist of the basics of moral goodness, meekness, and happiness from within. He sees himself as a "monk" of sorts but does not pressure others to agree nor to adopt his revelations on life. If one were to only take away one thing from an encounter with Murphy, it would most likely be his "zen" with life and inside himself.
His wordless style and casual demeanor can easily anger the proud, the attention-demanding, and those looking to prove themselves his better by any means necessary. He finds himself the victim of scam artistry now and then. Romantic flairs tend to be few and short-lived because of his refusal to settle, as well as the basic principle of having so little to give in a relationship as he lets almost nothing affect him and whatever does never escapes his inner bottling process.
appearance
Murphy is 5'9" which is slightly above average for a fully grown man, and weighs 180 lbs, slightly underweight, with a tall and lean build. His eyes are an unremarkable brown, and his hair is dark walnut, which can easily appear to simply be a less contrasting black.
Medium-length ragged hair that stays out of his eyes, but in every other direction, too; his bedhead is his defining unkempt characteristic. He smokes cigarettes now and then, and feels they are his yoga. His clothing style tends to accentuate his height and in better of times may even look a bit dapper in its simplicity. He never shies from hand-me-downs so he's usually always got a hole or rip that's visible to the naked eye.
history
Murphy has an older brother, Dick (Dick Bridges), who from the moment he announced that he wanted to be a police officer stole the spotlight in the family. Living in his older brother's shadow, Murphy felt less loved, the un-favorite, and often invisible. Puberty was the spark that lit his inner raging fire and Murphy trekked far down a lonely and dark path. In the rays of sunshine between, he studied herbal and Chinese medicine, and took a liking to psychotherapy. Murphy never did hit rock bottom, but in Murphy's early twenties, it was Dick who found him and spoke the words he so desperately needed to hear but was too far gone to process. An expensive medical and mental rehabilitation center were provided on behalf of Dick and his friends at the police department. It helped.
Recovered back to his old self pre-teenager, but still unsatisfied with life, Murphy joined a scenic postcard-looking mountain monastery to get away from technology and the temptations of his previous life. He studied herbs, medicine, and mental health a bit more, but earned no licenses or credentials. When his savings ran out and he could no longer work for his food and board, he was forced to leave.
The past year was spent as a travelling medicine seller, helping with mental health issues and general life advice where he could. The living was meager. When he found a pidove with a broken wing and nursed it back to health, he realized that the cost of the medicine for it had depleted his funds past all point of hope. The pidove flew off, of course, and Murphy realized that he too needed to spread bigger wings.
He decided that he would add pokemon breeding to his list of travelling trades and see if he could erase his debts to others that he had incurred along the way, and to see if there might be a new love of life and a new adventure to be found there.
SPECIAL NOTE FROM AUTHOR: This character will not be used to gain extra money or privileges with his medical/psych background, though it may be used as plotting points. This character does not have advanced training nor access to a lab/radiology/testing so most of what they have to say will boil down to "I read some of a medical book once and that oozing mole is definitely weird and you should probably see a doctor". The character will likely know about simple medical/psychological things, such as how to deliver a baby, how to make a splint, what depression is and what helps it, etc. Again, this is not an over-powered House MD character who will take one look at a character and rattle of 3 super rare diseases that are causing their trouble.
